Live Where You Live

Currently I live in South Jersey, outside of Philadelphia. But I used to live outside of Washington, D.C., where I spent most of my life, despite being a Jersey native. I frequently travel to D.C for work, and this morning I was on the Metro. As is usual for D.C. in the summertime, there were lots and lots of tourists, even during rush hour.

I used to curse tourists who don't know how to ride the metro. Anyone who frequents metro in D.C. knows that on the escalators, you stand on the right and walk on the left. I shan't rant about tourists taking up the whole escalator, or being totally confused about where to go. (Not that WMATA is any help with that to begin with, what with cryptic system maps and weird fares.) But it dawned on me this morning that in all my time in D.C., there is so much that I missed. And what really sucks is that so much of what I missed is free. That's the great thing about Washington - it's full of stuff to do that doesn't cost you a cent.

Anyway, my point, and I do have one, is that I was struck by how little we tend to take advantage of the great things to see and do in our own towns. I’m making it my goal to check out a lot more of the sights available to me in Philly this summer. You should do the same wherever you live.

  1. That’s why I put “visiting every single Smithsonian Museum in D.C.” on my list of 101 things to do.
